Background

Nui Beo Underground Mine is an operating coal mine in Ha Long City, Quang Ninh Province, Vietnam, operated by Nui Beo Coal Joint Stock Company, a subsidiary of the state-owned Vietnam National Coal – Mineral Industries Group (Vinacomin/TKV). The mine formerly operated as one of TKV's largest open-pit surface mines, reaching a peak of 5.1 million tonnes of raw coal in 2009 — at the time the first TKV unit to reach that level of annual output — before surface reserves declined significantly.

Construction of an underground mine at the site began in 2012, financed at 5,300 billion VND with an overall design capacity of 2 million tonnes of coal per year. The company-built underground workings, with an initial design capacity of 250,000 tonnes per year, produced their first tonne of coal in early May 2017. Basic construction of the underground project was completed at the end of 2021, the same year the company fully ceased open-pit extraction and closed the surface mine; the mine reached its one-millionth tonne of underground coal for the 2021 planned year that November. Current underground workings reach a depth of around -300 to -350 metres below sea level.

Underground production has risen steadily since the transition: 1.4 million tonnes in 2022, roughly 1.75 million tonnes in 2023, and 1.63 million tonnes of raw coal in 2024, with employment for more than 3,000 workers. In the first ten months of 2025 the mine extracted 1.65 million tonnes, putting it on track — according to company representatives — to reach its full 2-million-tonne annual design capacity by 25 December 2025, the first time the mine would do so. The company has said it is investing in a light mechanization system and accelerating tunnel excavation down to a depth of -500 metres to sustain production, which would make Nui Beo one of the deepest underground coal mines in Quang Ninh.

Coal produced at Nui Beo is anthracite, the type characteristic of the wider Quang Ninh coalfield, with a carbon content typically above 80% and used mainly for thermal purposes.
