Background

The Osinnikovskaya coal mine (Осинниковская шахта) is an underground mine in Kemerovo Oblast, Russia.

The mine is owned and operated by Shakhta Osinnikovskaya LLC, a subsidiary of Raspadskaya PJSC, which in turn is owned by Evraz. Evraz announced in December 2021 that it is planning to spin off Raspadskaya, but these plans were cancelled in March 2022 due to the sanctions against Russia.[5]

The mine is part of the Yuzhkuzbassugol coal mining complex.

It is one of Kuzbass’s oldest and deepest mines operating since 1932. Here, the main mining operations are carried out at a depth of 600–800 and high-quality coal is mined for the production of metallurgical coke.[6]

In March 2022, the mine was shut down for 90 days due to hazardous working conditions and the death of one miner.[7] Nevertheless production in 2022 decreased only marginally from 1.382 Mt in 2021 to 1.17 Mt in 2022. The company also attributed the decrease in production to increased methane content in coal seams as well as difficult geological conditions.[8]

In its 2021 annual report, Raspadskaya Coal Company stated that an investment project will continue at Osinnikovskaya coal mine, aiming to transition to new reservoirs, maintain the current level of production and purchase equipment.[9] In June 2023, it was reported that the mine is about to launch the longest longwall in its history with a length of 300 metres. Coal extraction from the previous longwall face was completed in spring and preparations began for the transition to the new longwall. The main difficulty is the large amount of equipment, which has to be moved from one block of the mine to the other. The plan is to put the new longwall into operation at the end of July 2023.[10]
