Background

The Pari Coal Mine is a proposed coal mining project in Mahakam Ulu Regency, East Kalimantan, Indonesia, operated by PT Pari Coal, a subsidiary of PT Adaro Energy Indonesia Tbk (through its affiliate PT Adaro Andalan Indonesia Tbk) and PT Alamtri Resources Indonesia Tbk. The mining site itself is situated in Kecamatan Laham, Mahakam Ulu Regency, with the associated coal transport road and terminal facilities planned across several districts of neighboring West Kutai Regency, including Linggang Bigung, Long Iram, Tering, Barong Tongkok, and Melak.[2] According to Petromindo, PT Pari Coal was expected to begin coal production in 2026.[3]

As of early 2025, the company had entered the phase of submitting its Environmental Impact Assessment (Amdal) permit application, with the document registered with Indonesia's Ministry of Environment and Forestry. The planned operation has a projected production capacity of approximately 3.5 million metric tons of coal per year, supported by a planned coal transport road of about 239.75 kilometers and a dedicated port/terminal covering 1,908.43 hectares.[2] PT Pari Coal's production-phase concession (under a Coal Mining Work Agreement, or PKP2B) covers 24,971 hectares and is valid from January 2, 2024, through April 9, 2054; an additional 5,702.73 hectares is designated for further exploration.[2]

As of 2026, PT Pari Coal, in partnership with Adaro, was reported to be constructing haul road infrastructure for coal transport spanning approximately 100 kilometers from its mining site in Mahakam Ulu Regency to Kampung Geleo Asa and Muara Benangaq. The company was also reported to be building and expanding port and jetty (loading and unloading) facilities covering approximately 1,800 hectares to accommodate tugboats and coal barges.[4]
