Background

The Pavlohradska Coal Mine is an underground coal mine in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, Ukraine. The Pavlohradska coal mine is an underground coal mine.

It is operated by DTEK Pavlogradugol, a subsidiary of DTEK Group, which is owned by Ukrainian billionaire Rinat Akhmetov.[7]

In 2020 and 2021, the coal mines of DTEK Pavlodgradugol produced 16 million tonnes of coal.[8][9]

The mine's production data is very limited with only 2015 production level available of 1.6Mt.[10]

According to DTEK's 2021 strategy, the Pavlohradska mine, with good coal reserves including adjacent Khutirske reserves, was planned to operate until 2030 and beyond — in contrast to four other Pavlogradugol mines scheduled for closure by 2025 due to reserve exhaustion.[11]

Pavlograd is considered the center of Western Donbass and coal mines are located around the city. Located 80km from the Donetsk region, the city periodically suffers from Russian shelling. Due to the Russian invasion, many people left Pavlograd, including mine workers, and about 3,600 miners were mobilized into the Defense Forces. Coal enterprises faced a personnel crisis and now many women are employed in the mines in Pavlograd.[12]

The mine appeared to be operating, as of the end of 2023. In November 2023, the mine celebrated its 55th anniversary, having produced 76.2 million tonnes of coal.[13]

As of June 2024, most of the mines in Western Donbass were planned to close, including the Pavlohradska coal mine.[14][15]

In July 2024, most of the Western Donbas mines temporarily suspended operations due to a sharp fall in coal demand following Russian destruction of DTEK's thermal power plant generation capacity.[16] No source has been identified confirming whether the Pavlohradska mine specifically resumed production after this suspension. DTEK Pavlogradugol as a whole continued to operate as of early 2025.[17]

As of April 2026, DTEK Pavlogradugol as a whole remains an active producer, with its mines in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast collectively producing the majority of Ukraine's coal output.[18] However, no source has been identified that confirms whether the Pavlohradska mine specifically resumed production following the temporary suspension in July 2024, and no individual production data for this mine beyond the 2015 figure are publicly available.
