Background
Perwaja Trengganu Sdn. Bhd was established in 1982 to operate a sponge iron and billet making plant.[1] Nippon Steel constructed the RM 1.2 billion steel plant, which was completed in August 1984.[2] Perwaja steel is the mini intergrated mill located in Kemaman, Terengganu with capacity of 1 mtpa of steelmaking and 1.2 mtpa of DR plant.[1] Kinsteel Bhd acquired 51% stake in Perwaja Steel in 2006.[3][4] The company had to shut down its operations in 2013 as its electricity and gas supplies were cut off due to unpaid bills amounting to RM176 million to TNB and RM275 million to Petronas. The company lapsed into Practice Note 17 status by Bursa Malaysia indicating its financial distress.[3] A 2017 attempt to bring in Chinese investment also failed and the plant remains shut.[3][5] The plant was taken over in 2022 by JXR manufacturing, a subsidiary of the Chinese industrial giant Jianlong Group, aiming to start up steel operation by 2024 to produce steel billets[6].
