Pipavav Port

From Global Energy Monitor

Pipavav Port is a multi-cargo port near Pipavav in Amreli district, Gujarat, India. The port is owned by Gujarat Pipavav Port Limited (GPPL) and managed by APM Terminals, which holds a 43.01% interest in GPPL.[1]

The port handles containers, dry-bulk cargo, liquid cargo and automobiles. Its dry-bulk facility is a multipurpose terminal capable of handling coal, fertilizer, minerals, agricultural commodities and project cargo.[2]

Location

Background

The current dry-bulk facility has an annual handling capacity of approximately 4 million tonnes. It has one dedicated dry-bulk berth and handles several commodities, including coal, fertilizer, minerals, agricultural products and project cargo.[2]

Coal was historically handled on a semi-mechanized basis. The port developed an open coal-storage yard with an approximate static capacity of 750,000 tonnes and a dust-suppression system.[4]

Suspension of coal handling

Gujarat Pipavav Port Limited reported that it temporarily suspended coal handling for operational reasons during fiscal year 2023–2024. In an investor call, management stated that coal was no longer being handled and that the port would require permission before the activity could resume.[5]

The suspension continued through fiscal year 2024–2025. GPPL's 2024–2025 annual report again stated that the company had temporarily suspended coal handling due to operational reasons. The port handled 2.21 million tonnes of dry-bulk cargo during the year, but this volume principally consisted of commodities other than coal.[6]

Cancelled coal expansion

Pipavav previously considered expanding its coal-handling facilities by approximately 5 mtpa. Earlier plans contemplated substantially larger dry-bulk and coal capacity, but the expansion was reduced and subsequently abandoned because of weak coal-import demand and the port's shift toward containers, liquid cargo and automobile handling.[2]

No current APM Terminals or GPPL development plan identifies an active coal-terminal expansion. The proposed additional 5 mtpa should therefore remain classified as cancelled.
