The Pirquenes power station is a proposed 50 MW coal and biomass-fueled plant that would supply the central SIC grid from El Pinar in Arauco province, Chile. In November 2012 Chile's supreme court confirmed the ruling by an appeals court that overturned approval of the plant, arguing that the environmental authority's approval was "arbitrary and illegal" because it was made without seeing an environmental impact study (EIS). Total investment for the Pirquenes project was set at US$82 million and construction was expected to take 24 months from the start date. The project has been under fire from local groups since approval was granted on December 11, 2011.[1]
