Background
The Pokrovs'ke coal mine is an underground coal mine in the south-east of Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine.
The mine is also known as Krasnoarmeyskaya-Zapadnaya No. 1 coal mine. The mine is owned by private joint-stock company Shakhtoupravleniye Pokrovske, an entity of Pokrovske Coal Company.
Based on a study from 2001, the mine represented one of the largest coal reserves in Ukraine having estimated reserves of 79.5 million tonnes.[7] The mine is also referred to as the Krasnoarmeyskaya-Zapadnaya No. 1 coal mine.
In 2021 Metinvest consolidated 100% of Pokrovske Coal Company.[8] As a result of consolidating the acquired businesses into the Group, Metinvest expected to become fully self-sufficient in coking coal for its hot metal production.[9]
The mine's buildings were shelled in June 2023 by Russian forces, with one fatality and several wounded.[10]
MetInvest's 3Q 2023 reports indicated that the mine is operating. Pokrovske Coal Company recorded a 33% rise in the output of coking coal concentrate for 9m 2023, reaching 2.4 million tonnes.[11] In 2022, coking coal concentrate production was 2.4 million tonnes.[12] However no ordinary coal production was reported in these reports.
A media source from November 2023 stated that the Pokrovske mine operates at reduced capacity due to the war and the inability to export products via traditional routes. However, from January to November 2023, workers managed to mine more than 5 million tons of coking coal. Part of the production goes to Ukrainian metallurgical plants, the rest goes to Eastern Europe.[13]
In February 2024, Metinvest commissioned the 11th longwall for coking coal production in Block 10 of the Pokrovske Colliery, with reserves of approximately 993,000 tonnes and a planned daily output of up to 2,500 tonnes.[14] In the first half of 2024, the mine produced 1.2 million tonnes of coking coal, with a year-end target of 2.8 million tonnes of concentrate.[15]
In early 2025, the mine had to stop production due to the approach of Russian troops. [16] Following the shutdown, Ukrainian steelmakers began sourcing coking coal through imports, primarily from Poland and Australia, as well as from Metinvest's US subsidiary.[17]
As of April 2026, no resumption of production has been reported. The Pokrovske coal mine remained classified as mothballed.
Associated Coal Mine Methane Mitigation Projects
Some coal mines have installed infrastructure which can use and/or destroy some methane emissions associated with mining. In 2024, the Global Methane Initiative reported that this mine had a mitigation project associated with it. This methodology page describes how GEM classified these projects and linked them with coal mines in the Global Coal Mine Tracker.

Methane Plumes Detected Nearby
Global Energy Monitor researchers analyze satellite-detected methane plumes in order to determine whether they have been observed at or near the site of GEM energy assets. The satellite data provider creates imagery of individual methane plumes and estimates their emission rates at the time of observation. GEM has reviewed many of these plume detections against Google Earth imagery and GEM’s own energy infrastructure tracker data. The following table lists methane plumes which are associated with the energy asset or facility based on distance and manual review. (A full description of the analysis process is available in the Global Methane Emitters Tracker methodology wiki page.)
