Mykolaiv Sea Commercial Port Coal Terminal, also known as Nikolaev Port(Ukrainian: Миколаївський морський торговельний порт), is a port in Mykolayiv, Ukraine.
Location
The port lies at the head of the Bug River estuary in southern Ukraine, about 65 kilometers north of the Black Sea.
Background
Port of Nikolayev (Port of Mykolayiv) was founded in 1789. The port is located at the mouth of the Southern Buh River and have access to the Black Sea through a 44-mile shipping canal. The port has a few operators, one of which is Mykolaiv Sea Commercial Port LLC, which is tantamount to a terminal.
The port has 15 berths.[1] Total capacity is listed at 23.5 mtpa.[2] It is unclear if there's a specialized coal terminal. According to one source, the larger port's loading rate for coal is 10,000 tonnes per day, potentially associated with Stevedoring Investment Company LLC.[3]
The port is one of the largest in Ukraine: in the first 5 months of 2020, the port handled 12.5 million tonnes of cargo, the second-most of any Ukrainian port.[4]
In the 8 months of 2020, the port handled 19.3 million tonnes of cargo, with grain as the predominant cargo at 8.4 million tonnes, and coal less predominant at 0.12 million tonnes,[5] 2.4 times lower than in the previous year.[6]
The port infrastructure suffered damage from Russian shelling since the start of the invasion. Operations are significantly affected. Given the disruptions to the operations and uncertainty regarding coal shipments, the coal terminal is presumed to be mothballed.
