Background

Progreso Coal Mine is a coal mine in the state of Coahuila, Mexico.[7] The Progreso mine is located in the municipality of Progreso, Coahuila, in Mexico's Región Carbonífera, within the San Patricio sub-basin of the broader Sabinas coal basin.[8] The mine is owned and operated by Carbonifera de San Patricio, S.A. de C.V., a private Mexican mining company registered in Sabinas, Coahuila.[9] Mining accounted for 92% of the municipal GDP of Progreso as of 2019, making it the most mining-dependent municipality in the Región Carbonífera.[10]

Production

The Progreso mine is Mexico's third most productive coal mine, surpassed only by the Micare and Mimosa mines. Coal production at the Progreso mine was estimated to be 1.339 million tonnes in 2021[7] and 1.101 million tonnes in 2020.[11]

According to GlobalData, the Progreso mine produced an estimated 1.35 million tonnes of coal in 2023, maintaining its position as Mexico's third-largest coal producer.[12]
