Background

Quinsam Coal Mine is an underground mine near Campbell River, Vancouver Island, Canada.

Due to a steep decline in thermal coal prices which made the mine uneconomic, the mine was mothballed in 2016.[5] While it reopened the following year, it was put on care and maintenance again in May 2019, and its operations currently remain suspended.[6] Quinsam Mine began operating in 1986 as an open-pit mine. Underground mining was added in 1993, and the following year, surface operations ceased making Quinsam an underground mine only.[7]

Canada's Hillsborough Resources Ltd. was the original owner and operator of the mine, but in 2009, Vitol Anker International acquired Hillsborough for $0.50 per share, becoming its new owner.[8] In 2017, the mine was sold to ERP Compliant Fuels LLC in 2017.[9]

The mine produced thermal coal for the cement industry.[5]

In 2016, Quinsam Mine was put on care and maintenance indefinitely due to "a prolonged and steep decline in thermal coal prices, changes in market demand and policy disincentives," which made the mine uneconomic.[5] After 20 months of suspension, operations resumed in October 2017.[9] However, shortly after, the mine was put on care and maintenance yet again and has remained temporarily closed ever since.[6]
