Background on Mine

The Rajrappa coal mine has a designed capacity of 3 million tonnes and is a part of the Rajrappa Project, which includes the mine and the company town of Rajrappa. Rajrappa is apparently the only active mine on the Ramgarh coalfield; there are numerous abandoned coal mines on this coalfield, many of which are mined illegally. The mine is owned by Central Coalfields Limited (a subsidiary of Coal India).

The mine began an expansion to the western bank of the Damodar River in August 2012.
