Background on Mine
The Rajrappa coal mine has a designed capacity of 3 million tonnes and is a part of the Rajrappa Project, which includes the mine and the company town of Rajrappa. Rajrappa is apparently the only active mine on the Ramgarh coalfield; there are numerous abandoned coal mines on this coalfield, many of which are mined illegally. The mine is owned by Central Coalfields Limited (a subsidiary of Coal India).[8]
The mine began an expansion to the western bank of the Damodar River in August 2012.[9]
