Background

Rietvlei Colliery is a surface coal mine near the town of Middelburg in Mpumalanga Province, South Africa.[2] The Rietvlei mine is located 27 km northeast of the town of Middelburg in the Mpumalanga province of South Africa. It is 51%-owned by Butsanani Energy, 34%-owned by broad-based black economic-empowerment partner Emalangeni Mining, and 15%-owned by black-owned mine managing partner Mwelase Group of Companies.[3]

Construction of the Rietvlei Colliery commenced in November 2018 with its first coal sales delivered in March 2019.[2] It is an opencast, strip truck and shovel operation consisting of three designed pits, with mining activity taking place in pit 1 and 2. Rietvlei is the only operation within the Group to supply thermal coal exclusively to the domestic Eskom market — the national electricity supplier in South Africa,.[3]

Based on the current LOM plan, mining operations at the colliery are expected to cease by 2032. However, the mine is only contracted to supply coal to the end of 2023 at which point it will seek a contract extension or provide coal into different markets.[3]
