Background

Rovat Coal Mine (also known as KMT) is a surface mine in Ayni, Tajikistan.[2]

The Rovat open-cast mine is being exploited by the Tajik Metallurgy Factory LLC since 2015. It is situated in the Ayni district, and is connected to the city of Dushanbe by a 100 km asphalt road.[2] The mine is also known as KMT.

The open-cast mine is located on the Central flank of the coal deposit Fan-Yagnob.[2] The Central flank, in turn, is divided into three sections: Kuhi-Maleksky, Ravatsky and Dzhizhikrutsky. The Rovat coal mine is presumably located in the Ravatsky section.[3]

Bankwatch report from 2017 mentioned that the design capacity of the mine is about 500 thousand tonnes and it is planned to build mines with annual output of 300 thousand tonnes (presumably, to increase the mine's capacity).[2]

In 2019, a media source reports that the coal mine contributed 19.4% to the national production of about 2 million tonnes. This equates to 0.39 million tonnes of coal.[4] In 2020 it was reported that the Metallurgy Factory will receive 316 hectares of agricultural land of the Ayni district from the state.[5] UNECE report dated December 2022 listed 2021 production at 0.343 million tonnes, with both surface and underground mining.[6]
