Background

Steel manufacturing in Peine dates back to 1858 with the founding of the Ilseder Hütte in Groß Ilsede to extract pig iron from local ore. In the early 20th century, the "Peiner-Träger," a wide-flange beam section, was invented and patented.[1] In the 1960's the plant transitioned to a BOF steel production process until 1996 when the EAF was commissioned at the plant. In 2001 the plant became part of Peiner Träger GmbH as an operationall independent subsidiary of Salzgitter AG.[2]

Transition

As part of the SALCOS (Salzgitter Low CO₂ Steelmaking) program, the company aims to reduce CO2 emissions by 95% by 2033. The company has purchased green electricity from wind power for the Peiner plant since 2023. The plant also uses 100% scrap feedstock.[3]
