Background

The Samsonivska-Zakhidna Coal Mine (also known by its Russian name Samsonovka-Zapadnaya) is an underground coal mine in Luhansk Oblast, Ukraine.

According to the Institute for War and Peace Reporting, most Donbas region mines were seized by Russians and pro-Russian rebels in late 2014 and many have endured electricity shortages and flooding ever since. The current output of the Donbas mines, including this one, is no longer transparent, and many are likely non-operational and on hiatus.[2] The Samsonivska-Zakhidna coal mine is an underground coal mine. It used to be owned and Krasnodonugol, a subsidiary of Metinvest Group, which is owned by Ukrainian billionaire Rinat Akhmetov.[3][4]

With the occupation of the region since 2014, the mine transitioned under the control of Republic Fuel Company Vostokugol State Enterprise.[5]

In 2019, the mine celebrated its 20th anniversary, having produced almost 20 million tonnes during this period. [6]

In 2020, a new longwall was launched at the mine.[7]

In August 2022, fire broke out at the mine which lasted at least three days.[8] It appeared that the mine was operating at that time.
