Background

Originally coal-fired, the Severodonetsk CHP power station began operating in 1952. It was designed to supply heat and power to the city of Severodonetsk, as well as the Severodonetsk Nitrogen Factory. Its original design capacity was 260 MW.[15] All of the original coal-fired units were converted to run on natural gas with fuel oil as the reserve fuel from 1976-1980.[16]

The power station was being considered for privatization.[17] However, in August 2021, Ukrainian state-owned enterprise Naftogaz took full control of the Severodonetsk CHP power station.[18][19]

War in Ukraine

In March 2022, the power station has halted operation due to the military hostilities in the area. The power station itself did not appear to be damaged.[20] There are reports that damage to water, heat, and electricity distribution networks is extensive in the region and in Severodonetsk and is at the moment impossible to repair due to the ongoing hostilities.[21] In June 2022 the power station was virtually destroyed by Russian shelling.[22] As of December 2023, the power plant is located on the territory occupied by Russia and has not been restored.[23]
