Severstal Cherepovets steel plant (Череповецкий металлургический комбинат (Russian)), also known as CherMK; Cherepovets Steel Mill, is a blast furnace-basic oxygen furnace (BF-BOF) and electric arc furnace (EAF) steel plant operating in Cherepovets, Vologda, Russia.

Location

The map below shows the exact location of the plant in Cherepovets, Vologda, Russia:

  • Location: 30 Mira Street, Vologda Region, Cherepovets, Russia, 162600
  • Coordinates (WGS 84): 59.143998, 37.862950 (exact)

Background

The first crude iron from a blast furnace was produced in 1955, and the first steel was produced in 1958. Subsequently, the steel plant turned into one of the largest enterprises in Russia with a powerful blast furnace, basic oxygen furnace, and open hearth production, electric steel-smelting shops, and facilities for the production of sheet and long products. In 1993, the Severstal company was established with the plant as its core enterprise. In subsequent years, unprofitable open-hearth production was closed.[1] Severstal Cherepovets is part of Severstal's Russian Steel Division along with the Izhora Pipe Mill and Severstal-Metiz.[2]

In October 2023, Severstal announced plans to build an iron-ore pellet production facility at the premises of the Severstal Cherepovets steel plant, which will allow to retire sinter machines of the Sintering Shop #2 having negative impact on the environment.[3]
