Background

The Stepova Coal Mine is an underground coal mine in Lviv Oblast, Ukraine. The Stepova coal mine is owned and operated by the state-owned Lvivgughiliya (Lviv Coal).

In 2017, a tragic accident occurred at the mine where an explosion caused by a methane-air mixture killed eight miners, with nine injured.

The mine produced about 0.3 Mt in 2021, while total production by Lvivgughiliya was 1.173 Mt.

As of October 2023, the mine appeared to be operational.

The mine continued to operate in subsequent years. No specific production data for 2024 or 2025 have been identified in publicly available sources for the Stepova mine individually. As of April 2026, Lvivvuhillia as a whole continued to operate, with at least one of its mines reported to have fulfilled its annual production plan for 2025 and a new longwall commissioned in late 2025.

In March 2026, the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine announced plans to transfer Lvivvuhillia to the State Property Fund for the purpose of finding private investors. The Stepova mine was listed among the five currently operating mines within Lvivvuhillia's portfolio of six, alongside the Velykомostivska, Chervonohradska, Mezhyrichanska, Vidrodzhennia, and Lisova mines. As of April 2026, the mine is classified as operating.
