Background

The Syferfontein coal mine is an underground mine operated by Sasol Mining near Secunda, in Mpumalanga, South Africa.[5]

The colliery is comprised of the Riversdale, Tweedraai, and Weltevrede underground mining areas.[6] The Syferfontein Colliery was established in 1989 to supply coal to the Sasol Synthetic Fuels (SSF) Plant in Secunda. Between 1991 and 2000, coal was mined from the Highveld Coalfield with the opencast strip mining method, and underground mining commenced in 1993. Though Syferfontein was originally an open pit strip mine, the original strip mine has been decommissioned and partially backfilled and rehabilitated, and most mining now occurs underground.[7][5]

Coal from the mine supplies the local market by feeding Sasol’s coal-to-synfuels plant, Sasol Synfuels.[8]
