Background

The Taldinsky-Zapadny surface coal mine (Талдинский-Западный разрез) is a mothballed coal mine in Kemerovo Oblast, Russia. The Taldinsky-Zapadny surface coal mine was owned and operated by TalTek until 2021 when it was sold to Kusbassrazrezugol.[3] Later in 2022, the mine was sold again to a businessman from Altai region Anton Petrov, stating that the mine has been operating with losses.[4][5]

In 2020, the mine produced 0.83 million tonnes of coal, of which 0.7 (83%) were exported with 0.5 million of exports delivered to Ukraine.[3] Previously the mine produced about 1.2 million tonnes per year.[6][7] In 2019, production was 0.72 million tonnes.[3]

As of 2022, the mine's remaining reserves were only 5 million tonnes and according to a media article, the mine was acquired to be potentially used as a storage for excavated rocks from the nearby Taldinsky coal mine, operated by Kuzbassrazrezugol.[5]

The number of personnel reduced from 221 in 2021 to 4 in 2022.[5]

The mine was not listed as one of the operating mines as of January 2023 in a government document.[8]
