Background

The Tan Yen Underground Mining Project (Dong Trang Bach Mine) is a proposed underground coal mine in Hoang Que Ward, Uong Bi City, Quang Ninh Province, Vietnam, developed by Uong Bi Coal Company, a subsidiary of the state-owned Vietnam National Coal – Mineral Industries Group (Vinacomin/TKV). The project broke ground on 19 August 2025, timed to mark the 80th anniversary of Vietnam's National Day, with a total post-tax investment of 1.201 trillion VND.

The project covers an area of more than 3.4 square kilometres and has permitted reserves of 13.001 million tonnes of coal available for mine design, with a design capacity of 450,000 tonnes of run-of-mine coal per year. Company and TKV officials have described the project as necessary to sustain Uong Bi Coal Company's production and workforce as older mine areas within the company are depleted, and it is expected to provide stable employment for more than 1,000 workers. As with other mines in the wider Quang Ninh coalfield, the coal at Tan Yen is expected to be anthracite of thermal grade.
