Background

"Tavan Tolgoi (Small) Coal Mine" (Таван толгой) (also known as "Small Tavan Tolgoi") is an open-pit coal mine located in the Tsagaan-Ovoo area of Tsogttsetsii soum, Ömnögovi (South Gobi) Province, Mongolia. It is not to be confused with Tavan Tolgoi Coal Mine owned by Erdenes.

The mine is situated approximately 98 km east of Dalanzadgad, the provincial capital, and 15 km southwest of Tsogttsetsii town, some 550 km from the national capital Ulaanbaatar[6] and approximately 250 km from the Chinese border, providing direct market access to Chinese steel producers.[7]

The mine forms part of the broader Tavan Tolgoi coal deposit. Geological studies were conducted to a depth of 635 m using column drilling.[6]

TT JSC held probable coking coal reserves of 80 million tonnes and resources of around 100 million tonnes. The company estimated 60% of its deposit to be coking coal.[7]

Approximately 95% of TT JSC's products are sold on the Chinese market, with the remainder used locally to generate electricity. Thermal coal was sold to local consumers at below-market prices.[7]

Production

The mine supplied coal to Ömnögovi, Middle Gobi, and East Gobi provinces as an open-pit operation since 1966.[6] TT JSC first exported coal to China in 2004. By 2007, exports reached 1.75 million tonnes. Production in 2010 was 5.2 million tonnes, representing a compound annual growth rate of 60.3% from 2006 to 2010. The company produced approximately 6 million tonnes in 2011.[7]

In 2024, the mine produced 4.30 million tonnes of coal.[8]
