Background

The Termosierra power station has operated as a combined cycle power plant since 2001.[8][9] Plant owner EPM (Empresas Públicas de Medellín) bills Termosierra as Colombia's most efficient thermal power plant, and the country's second largest after the Tebsa (Termobarranquilla) power station.[8][9][10]

EPM has reported the plant's capacity to be between 455[10] and 460 MW[8][9]. However, other sources report smaller capacities ranging from 353 MW[11] to 364 MW[12] to 393 MW.[13]

In August 2021, a fire damaged the steam turbine at Termosierra, reportedly reducing capacity to 246 MW[13], although Colombia's official government data shows the capacity holding steady at 353 MW throughout 2021 and 2022.[11]
