Background

Ulughem Ugol LLC, a subsidiary of Severstal-Resource, and the leader of this development project, has been working to develop the Ulug-Khem coal basin since 2010.

The project has two 'sites,' one known as the Boom area deposit and the other for the Central Ulug Khem coal basin.[2] The Central site is in the Tandinsky District, while the Boom area deposit is located in the Kyzylsky District. Both are near the town of Kyzyl in Tuva Republic.

As of 2020, the company has carried out a feasibility study of permanent exploration conditions and determined the total coal reserves at the 'Central' coal site. The update from June 2020 on the Central site indicated construction should begin no later than December 31, 2019.[1] At the Boom area site, the site's reserves were being determined, and the company was able to conduct geological exploration of the Boom area provide for prospecting and appraisal work, as well as develop a feasibility study of temporary conditions. But, there was no construction deadline set.[1]

As of October 2022, there were no news on the project's status since June 2020 - it therefore appeared to be shelved. There were also no news on the project as of October 2023.
