Background

The Wara coal mine is an opencast mine, operated by Adaro Indonesia, a subsidiary of Adaro Group, with a capacity of 6.7 million tonnes-per-annum (MTPA) in South Kalimantan, Indonesia.[12]

The mine is adjacent to the Paringin coal mine and Tutupan coal mine, effectively operating as a single mine complex, producing 50 million tonnes per annum. Adaro Indonesia (AI), a subsidiary of Adaro Group operates the Wara mine.

As of 2022, AI was 88.5%-owned by the Adaro Energy group (later restructured as PT Alamtri Resources Indonesia Tbk); AI's mining license, a Special Mining Business License as a Continuation of Contract/Agreement Operations (IUPK-KOP), is valid until October 1, 2032.[13][14]

Coal produced at Wara, like AI's other pits, is a subbituminous thermal coal marketed under the trademark "Envirocoal," with a medium calorific value and ultra-low ash, sulphur, and nitrogen oxide content.[13] In 2022, Wara produced 4.3 million tonnes of coal, one of three contributing pits alongside Tutupan (39.8 million tonnes) and Paringin (4.9 million tonnes, mined out that November), against AI's total production of 49.1 million tonnes that year.[14] By 2024, Wara's production had grown to 7.0 million tonnes, contributing to AI's total output of 50.8 million tonnes (the remainder, 43.8 million tonnes, from Tutupan).[13]

As of December 31, 2022, Wara's two blocks (Wara I and Wara II) held combined coal resources of approximately 2,541.6 million tonnes (Wara I: 1,917.7 million tonnes; Wara II: 623.9 million tonnes) under JORC Code 2012 reporting; Wara I held estimated reserves of 264.9 million tonnes (13.8 million tonnes proved, 251.1 million tonnes probable), while no reserves had yet been estimated for Wara II that year.[14] By a June 2024 JORC estimate prepared by PT Quantus Consultants Indonesia, Wara I's resources were reported at approximately 1,060.6 million tonnes and Wara II's at approximately 326.5 million tonnes.[15] Mined coal from AI's pits is hauled via an 80-kilometer dedicated road to the Kelanis terminal on the Barito River, from where it is barged downriver for transshipment, including via the Pulau Laut coal terminal.[16]
