Background

The Welgemeend coal mine (also known as Mavungwani Colliery) is an opencast and underground mine that's owned and operated by Mbuyelo Coal, in Mpumalanga, South Africa.[4]

Welgemeend Coal Mine was previously owned by IchorCoal and operated by Mbuyelo Coal, but in recent years, Mbuyelo has acquired ownership of the mine.[5] Coal from the mine is supplied to Eskom and is also sold into the local domestic and export markets.[6]

According to IchorCoal's 2018 financial report, an underground section is in development for the mine site and was planned to produce first coal in January 2020.[7] However, it is unclear if underground operations have begun. (Mbuyelo's website states it is currently focusing on the mine's opencast operations.[4])

The mining right over the western part of the colliery expired in May 2022 and is in the process of being extended. The mining right over the eastern colliery expires in August 2044.[8]
