Coal Mine Boundaries and Methane Sources

Global Energy Monitor researchers have identified coal mine boundary/boundaries and potential sources of coal mine methane (CMM) for this mine. These research results can be used to drive CMM attribution and mitigation efforts, particularly when combined with remotely sensed methane plume locations and mine ownership data. Explore the results with the embedded map at the top of this page by clicking on the mine boundary polygon or the CMM placemarkers to reveal more details. A detailed description of this research can be found in Coal Mine Boundaries and Methane Sources. This data is also available as a downloadable companion dataset to the Global Coal Mine Tracker and the Global Methane Emitters Tracker.

Statement of Coal Resources and Reserves for the Marfork Mining Complex, Feb 9 2024, https://web.archive.org/web/2/https://minedocs.com/26/Marfork-TR-12312023.pdf states, "The Marfork Mining Complex is comprised of the Marfork underground operations and the Workman Creek surface mines.". Also in section 12.2.1.1 Workman Creek Surface, on page 53 : "Workman Creek reserves consists of six permit areas that are adjacent to each other and are centered around the Workman Creek office and surface facility area". And, Table 12.1 Workman Creek Coal Reserves Summary, on page 53, lists the names of the 6 permit areas : Center Contour, Eagle No. 2, Long Ridge #1, Middle Ridge and Turkeyfoot. Finally, Figure 13.1 Workman Creek Surface Mine and Permit Areas Aerial View on page 63 shows the boundaries of the six permit areas.

Polygons for the six permits were extracted from the West Virginia DEP's GIS Mining and Reclaimation permit boundary shapefile at https://web.archive.org/web/20250618214656/https://tagis.dep.wv.gov/home/gis%20data. Simplified versions of the polygons were then used to create the mine boundary. The area of the mine boundary is approximately 22 sq km.
