Background
Yun Khean Coal Mine, operated by Yun Khean Minerals (Cambodia) Co Ltd, is a surface, open-pit lignite coal mine located in Oddar Meanchey Province, Cambodia, near the town of Anlong Veng.[5] According to a 2019 ERIA report, the underground coal mine operated by Yun Khean Minerals in Anlong Veng was developed with support from China, though the report noted its operations were suspended at the time of writing.[6]
A 2023 investigative report by Mekong Eye described the mine as operating "as usual" as of that year, located roughly two kilometers from the stalled Han Seng coal-fired power plant it was intended to eventually supply. The same report quoted a nearby resident, Boy Troch, who said he believed mining operations had contaminated groundwater beneath his farm, affecting crops and wildlife, and who expressed concern that coal mining activity in the district could expand if the adjacent power plant became operational.[5]
