Zarand Iranian Steel Company Kerman plant (زیسکو, شرکت فولاد زرند ایرانیان), also known as ZISCO, is a steel plant in Zarand, Kerman, Iran that operates blast furnace (BF), basic oxygen furnace (BOF), direct reduced iron (DRI), and electric arc furnace (EAF) technology.

Background

The Zarand Iranian Steel Company (ZISCO) was founded in 2008 as a subsidiary of the Middle East Mines & Mineral Industries Development Holding Company (MIDHCO).[1][2]

In addition to iron and coal mines, ZISCO constructed a coking plant which went into operation in 2012.[3] After long delays, the Blast Furnace and Basic Oxygen Furnace units in the steelmaking section of the plant started production in 2020.[4] Chinese workers were brought in to complete some sections of the construction and Blast Furnace installation, which sparked controversy in local media.[5]

In 2021, the Trump administrations placed sanctions on MIDHCO, citing the Iranian metals sector as an important revenue source for the Iranian regime. This may have impacted the production and export revenue of the Zarand Iranian Steel Company plant.[6]

There have been multiple safety incidents including fires and explosions of molten metal at the plant, including incidents in 2021 and one in 2024 which injured several workers.[6][7][8]
