Background

Zuun Khushuut Coal Mine (Зүүн Хөшөөтийн нүүрсний уурхай) is an operating surface coal mine located in Mörön bag, Darvi soum, Khovd Province, western Mongolia.[5] The mine is operated by Tethysmining LLC ("Тефис майнинг" ХХК), a subsidiary of Cosmo Coal LLC, which is in turn part of the Cosmo Group.[6]

Tethysmining LLC was established in 2004 as a subsidiary of Vale S.A. (Brazil), one of the world's largest mining companies. In 2013, Cosmo Coal LLC acquired the company from Vale.[6] The company holds mining licences 18293А and 18291 over the Zuun Khushuut deposit.[5]

Coal produced at the Zuun Khushuut mine was planned to be supplied both to the domestic Mongolian market and for export to China. In the initial years of operation, export coal was planned to be sold as raw coal, while in later stages the operator planned to process the coal for coking purposes before supplying it to Chinese industrial markets.[5]

Production

In 2024, Tethysmining LLC produced 2.65 million tonnes of coal at the Zuun Khushuut mine.[7]
