Cabo Froward Coal Terminal

From Global Energy Monitor

The Cabo Froward Coal Terminal is a mothballed coal import terminal located at the Port of Coronel in Biobío, Chile. The terminal historically supplied thermal coal for electricity generation at the Bocamina power station, which was retired in the early 2020s.

Location

The two coal piers of the Cabo Froward Coal Terminal are located just offshore from the coal-fired Bocamina Power Station in the port of Coronel, Biobío, Chile.[1]

Background

The Cabo Froward Coal Terminal was a coal terminal serving the Bocamina power station in Biobío, Chile.[1] The terminal consisted of two separate piers with coal-handling facilities: the older Muelle Jureles, and the newer Muelle Chollín. Both piers appear to have stopped handling coal following the retirement of Units 1 and 2 of the Bocamina coal plant in 2020 and 2022, respectively.

Muelle Jureles, with a coal handling capacity of approximately 1 million tonnes per annum[2], received coal shipments for the original Unit 1 of the Bocamina power station. Muelle Chollín, with a coal handling capacity of 2.5 mtpa[3], began operating in 2011[4], in anticipation of the commissioning of the Bocamina coal plant's second unit in 2012.

Cabo Froward's annual reports show that annual coal throughput approached or exceeded 1 million tonnes on several occasions, reaching a peak of 1,147,942 tonnes in 2018. Coal throughput totals were as follows during the terminal's most active years, from 2011 to 2020:

  • 2011: 284,886 tonnes[5]
  • 2012: 724,886 tonnes[5][6]
  • 2013: 939,254 tonnes[5][6]
  • 2014: 221,422 tonnes[5]
  • 2015: 281,991 tonnes[5]
  • 2016: 1,012,555 tonnes[5][7]
  • 2017: 909,016 tonnes[5]
  • 2018: 1,147,942 tonnes[5]
  • 2019: 1,078,675 tonnes[8]
  • 2020: 718,598 tonnes[8]

Following the closure of Unit 2 of the Bocamina coal plant in 2022, Cabo Froward's 2023 report noted that no coal was shipped through the Coronel terminal in 2023, and the company confirmed its intention to diversify the categories of goods handled by the terminal going forward.[9]
