Background

The Chitaugol Vostochny Coal Mine (Восточный разрез) is an operating surface coal mine in Zabaykalsky Krai, Russia.

It is not to be confused with Vostochny coal mine in Novosibirsk or Vostochny coal mine (Salek). The Vostochny coal mine used to be owned and operated by Chitaugol LLC, a subsidiary of Siberian Coal Energy Company (SUEK).[3][4] However this subsidiary was not listed in SUEK's 2021 annual report and several company databases listed Chitaugol LLC as liquidated.[5][6] It is assumed that the mine is owned directly by SUEK.

SUEK mines lignite coal at two surface mines in Zabaykalsky Krai - at Vostochny coal mine and Kharanorsky coal mine. Coal is supplied predominantly to the nearby power stations.[7] In 2022 the two mines together produced 6.48 million tonnes.[7] Without further exact information, knowing that Kharanorsky coal mine produced about 4.4 million tonnes, it is estimated that Vostochny produced around 2 million tonnes.[8]
