Constanta Port ADM Coal Terminal, also known as Constanța or Constantza Port North Star Shipping or Minmetal mineral terminal is a coal terminal in Romania.
Location
Constanta Port ADM Coal Terminal is located on the Black Sea at the mouth of the Danube River, in Constanța, Romania.
Background
The Port of Constanta has two terminals handling coal, in addition to ore, bauxite and coke: Comvex terminal and Minmetal terminal. Minmetal and theor partner North Start Shipping LLC have been acquired by ADM.[1] The terminals can operate both maritime and river vessels, with an unloading rate over 45,000 tons/24 hours (respectively 2,000 tons/hour/each bridge) from maritime vessels and a loading rate into barges of 2,000 tons/hour. The storage capacity is 4.7 million tons simultaneously and the annual operation capacity is over 27 million tons.[2]
The port handled the maximum 7.1 mtpa of coal and coke in 2008, which declined to 2.1 mtpa in 2024.[3] In 2024, Comvex handled 1.2 million tonnes of coal. The ADM coal terminal is then estimated to have handled 0.9 million tonnes of coal.
The start year of the terminal is the start year of the port. It is unclear if this terminal was part of the port since the beginning and if the port started handling coal in 1909.
Port of Constanta
The Port of Constanta has been operating for millennia, with trade first occurring in the 6th century B.C.E. Construction of the modern port began in 1896 and was completed in 1909. The port has a total handling capacity of 100 million tonnes per year.[4] The port handled 60 million tonnes of cargo in 2020.[5]
In May 2015 the port was acquired by Archer Daniels Midland.[6] The port used to report "coal and coke" traffic in annual reports, which has been renamed to "solid mineral fuels" in recent years, starting around 2017.[3]
The port handled the maximum 7.1 mtpa of coal and coke in 2008, which declined to 2.1 mtpa in 2024.[3] It is the primary port for bulk commodities shipments to and from Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, and Hungary.[6]
