Constanta Port Comvex Coal terminal, also known as Constanța or Constantza Port Comvex mineral terminal is a coal terminal in Romania.
Location
Constanta Port Comvex Coal terminal is located on the Black Sea at the mouth of the Danube River, in Constanța, Romania.
Background
The Port of Constanta has two terminals handling coal, in addition to ore, bauxite and coke: Comvex terminal and Minmetal terminal. Minmetal has been acquired by ADM.[1] The terminals can operate both maritime and river vessels, with an unloading rate over 45,000 tons/24 hours (respectively 2,000 tons/hour/each bridge) from maritime vessels and a loading rate into barges of 2,000 tons/hour. The storage capacity is 4.7 million tons simultaneously and the annual operation capacity is over 27 million tons.[2]
COMVEX is the only Terminal operating solid raw materials in bulk from the Black Sea area which can board high capacity “cape size” ships (up to 220,000 tdw), as it has an unloading sea quay made of 5 berths of total 1,400 m long and water depths ranging between 10.8 and 18.5 m, discharge rate from maritime vessels of up to 45,000 tons/day, storage capacity of 4 million tons simultaneously.[3]
In 2025, the Comvex terminal handled 1.4 million tonnes of coal.[3] The Comvex terminal has recently shifted its focus to grain in response to weaker demand for handling coal and other minerals.[4]
In 2024, Comvex handled 1.2 million tonnes of coal. The ADM coal terminal is then estimated to have handled 0.9 million tonnes of coal.
Port of Constanta
The Port of Constanta has been operating for millennia, with trade first occurring in the 6th century B.C.E. Construction of the modern port began in 1896 and was completed in 1909. The port has a total handling capacity of 100 million tonnes per year.[5] The port handled 60 million tonnes of cargo in 2020.[6]
In May 2015 the port was acquired by Archer Daniels Midland.[7] The port used to report "coal and coke" traffic in annual reports, which has been renamed to "solid mineral fuels" in recent years, starting around 2017.[8]
The port handled the maximum 7.1 mtpa of coal and coke in 2008, which declined to 2.1 mtpa in 2024.[8] It is the primary port for bulk commodities shipments to and from Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, and Hungary.[7]
Despite the port being built in 1909, 1991 is listed as the start year for this terminal based on the owner company's establishment year and lack of data on prior coal-handling activities.
