Donetsksteel Metallurgical Plant

From Global Energy Monitor

Donetsksteel Metallurgical Plant (Донецксталь-металлургический завод (Russian)), also known as Donetsksteel, Donetsksteel - Iron And Steel Works PJSC, Donetsk Metallurgical Plant (predecessor), DMZ (predecessor), and Donetsk Iron & Steel Works (predecessor), is a 1500 thousand tonnes per annum (TTPA) blast furnace (BF) and electric arc furnace (EAF) iron plant operating in Donetsk, Donetsk, Ukraine.

Location

The map below shows the location of the steel plant in Donetsk, Donetsk, Ukraine.

  • Coordinates (WGS 84): 47.982276, 37.810634 (exact)

Background

Donetsksteel Metallurgical Plant was established in August 2002[2] on the basis of the blast furnace and open-hearth shops shops of the Donetsk Metallurgical Plant and is located at the same location as the original plant.[3] Donetsk Metallurgical Plant (original plant, start year 1872[4]) has since then become a rolling mill and does not produce crude iron or steel.[5] Donetsksteel Metallurgical Plant shares its location with the Yuzovsky Metallurgical Plant.

Donetsksteel Metallurgical Plant was seized by breakaway authorities of Donbass and has been controlled by Vneshtorgservis CJSC since March 2017.[3] In 2021, a new company, OOO DMZ, was established as the owner of the plant.[6][7]

Production capacities and equipment

OHF was shut down in 2012.[8] At least one blast furnace out of the two seems to be operating.[9][10][11][12]

Operating status

The plant has experienced issues since 2017 when the breakaway authorities of Donbass announced that they were seizing all industrial enterprises operating on their territory. In 2017, the plant management announced that all workers would be laid off, and the plant stopped operating completely in 2019.[13] However, it has resumed production of crude iron in May 2021.[14][15] As of 2023, no changes have been found. It seems the plant is operating, with at least one blast furnace producing pig iron.[11][12]

EAF expansion

A new EAF workshop was to start operations in 2013-2014, with expected capacity ranging from 1500[3] to 1800[16] TTPA, depending on the source. However, the plans were disrupted by the Russian invasion.[3] There are records of Russian forces transferring the EAF from Donetsksteel Metallurgical Plant to Yenakiieve Iron & Steel Works plant.[17]

Yuzovsky Metallurgical Plant may still be confused as part of the Donetsksteel Metallurgical Plant. The 120-tonne EAF is part of the Yuzovsky Metallurgical Plant.[18] A 150-tonne EAF was in construction at Donetsksteel Metallurgical Plant in 2013 before the Russian invasion.[19]
