Background

The GML (Grindrod Mozambique Limitada) terminal exports sized coal destined for the Turkish domestic market, along with iron oxide/magnetite. As of 2026, the GML terminal had a total throughput capacity of 4 million tonnes per annum.[1]

The coal exported from the GML terminal is sourced from mines in southern Africa.[2] Grindrod's 2025 annual report indicated that coal was being transported to Maputo by rail from the Belfast region of South Africa via a transfer point in Komatipoort.[3] Grindrod has also reported coal shipments to Maputo from Botswana.[4]

According to a 2012 North-West University thesis, "GML has developed from very humble beginnings in 2009 to what is today a multi-million ton bulk export facility. GML was established to exclusively handle sized coal out of South Africa; however, through continued demand from other African countries, GML is now handling bulk coal exports from countries such as Botswana and Zimbabwe...; [t]he coal is loaded by skip and either vessel or shore crane to minimise the degradation of the sized product."[5]

Disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in GML suffering a 53.4% decline in tonnage, from 738,339 tonnes in 2019 to 344,305 tonnes in 2020.[6] However, Grindrod reported that coal exports from the GML terminal rebounded sharply in subsequent years, reaching 3.22 million tonnes in 2022 and 3.68 million tonnes in 2023.[7][8] Grindrod did not report coal-only throughput figures for the GML terminal in 2024 or 2025; rather, the company's 2025 annual report listed totals for all dry-bulk goods combined, citing 2,880,055 tonnes handled in 2024, and 1,323,670 tonnes in 2025.[3]
