Background

Main Line

Built in 2002, The Gas Pipeline To The West is the longest pipeline project in Ireland. The pipeline was built to bring gas from Dublin to the west of Ireland and connect to the Limerick Spur of the Dublin To Cork pipeline, completing a ring connecting Cork, Dublin, Galway, Limerick, and Waterford in an integrated network. The ring is supplied by the Corrib Oil And Gas Field as well as the UK-Ireland Interconnector Gas Pipeline and the UK-Ireland Interconnector 2.[5]

New Towns Extension

Several lateral extensions to the pipeline were constructed as part of the New Towns project. The first pipelines included in the project were proposed in 2002. The extensions include pipelines to Galway City, Tullamore, and Mullingar which were completed in 2004.[6] There is limited information on when the the Enfield and Tynagh extensions were commissioned although they are now operational.[8] Pipelines Loughrea, and Gort were completed in 2009.[14][15]

Foynes To Listowel Pipeline

The pipeline was first proposed in 2016 and connects to the main Pipeline To The West are Cragg's Above Ground Installation in Limerick.[16] It allowed for the supply of gas to Kerry Foods as well as several towns.[10]

Ballymahon Extension Sections 1 & 2

The Ballymahon extension comprises a lateral extension of the mainline. Section 1 runs from Ballymahon to the holiday village, Center Parcs, in County Longford. Section 2 runs from Athlone, County Westmeath to Ballymahon, County Longford.[11] Center Parcs contributed €3 million to the cost of the project[17]
