Background

HES Gdynia Coal Terminal is a bulk terminal that handles agricultural commodities, minerals, fertilisers, biomass, aggregates, iron ore, coke, met coal, thernal coal,b iofuels and renewable fuels (incl. HVO) , diesel oil , petrochemicals , chemicals (3,6,8,9 classes IMDG Code).[1]

HES Gdynia Coal Terminal and OT Port Gdinya terminal appear to be the two terminals handling coal at the Gdynia Port. The Gdynia port handled 1.1 million tonnes of coal in 2024.[2]

The port exports coal from Poland,[3] and imports coal from around the globe, including Australia, Russia, and the US.[4] In 2020, the port handled 24 million tonnes of cargo in total, and 1.7 million tonnes of coal and coke, a significant decrease from 2.6 and 2.9 million tonnes of coal and coke handled in 2018 and 2019, respectively.[5] In the last ten years, the largest transshipment of coal was in 2022, at 3.4 mtpa.[5] The terminal's coal-handling capacity is estimated as an average between the two coal-handling terminals, at 1.7 mtpa.

Outer Port Expansion

In 2018, the Port of Gdynia began exploring plans for a port extension to increase its total capacity. The project, referred to as the "Gdynia Outer Port", would add 151ha to the existing port by constructing an artificial land extension into the Baltic Sea. When completed, the expansion will increase the Port of Gdynia's annual capacity by approximately 25 million tonnes per annum (mtpa). The port authority hopes to finalize plans by 2024 and complete construction by 2028.[6] The project is expected to cost approximately EUR787 million.[7]

In 2021, the Polish government adopted a resolution to build a terminal for the construction of offshore windfarms at the Gdynia Outer Port, with target implementation by 2026.[8]
