JSW BPSL Jharkhand steel plant, also known as Bhushan Power and Steel (BPSL) Jharkhand, is a steel plant in Potka, East Singhbhum, Jharkhand, India that operates electric arc furnace (EAF) technology.
Location
The map below shows the approximate location of the plant in Potka, East Singhbhum, Jharkhand, India:

Background
Bhushan Power and Steel Ltd (BPSL) signed an MoU with Jharkhand state government in September 2006 to set up a 3 mtpa steel plant and 900 MW power plant in Potka village, Jharkhand at a cost of INR 12,000 crores. Activists and local farmers and tribal communities opposed the project alleging violations in land acquisition. A public hearing in September 2012 ended abruptly as protests broke out. The project has been in limbo since.[1][2]
Jindal Steel and Power Limited had proposed a 6 mtpa integrated steel plant and 1320 MW power plant in Asanboni, Potka, Jharkhand at a cost of INR 22,000 crore. A majority of the villagers and landowners had favoured the project during the public hearing.[3]
Bhushan Power & Steel Ltd. was acquired by JSW Steel in September 2019.[4]
In 2021, OECD listed the project as one of the upcoming capacities with a targeted start year of 2030.[5] As of January 2025, there hasn't been any updates on the project. The project is assumed cancelled.
In May 2025, the Supreme Court (SC) rejected JSW Steel's resolution plan for BPSL. The company had acquired the debt-laden BPSL for Rs 19,700 crore in 2019 after the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) approved its insolvency resolution plan. The SC set it aside, terming it illegal and in violation of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC). JSW Steel is likely to rework its plans.[6] The SC order was followed by protests by large number of people including employees, workers and vendors.[7]
In September 2025, the Supreme court overturned its earlier order and upheld JSW's takeover of BPSL.[8]
