Background
The Jellinbah coal mine, also known as Jellinbah East, is located 90 kilometers east of Emerald in the Bowen Basin of central Queensland, Australia. The Jellinbah mine is owned by Jellinbah East Joint Venture, with Jellinbah Group (or Jellinbah Resources) having 70% interest and Marubeni Coal and Sojitz Coal each with 15% interests.[7]
Anglo American, which is an "associate" of the Jellinbah Group Pty Limited (which was known as "Queensland Coal Mine Management (Pty) Limited" before 2011), owns a 23.3% interest in Jellinbah operations.[8]

Expansion
In 2019, the Jellinbah East Joint Venture submitted a proposal titled the "Jellinbah Central North Extension," which proposed an addition of three mining leases to the existing Jellinbah Coal Mine.[14] (The current mine, Jellinbah, encompasses three operating mine areas: Jellinbah Central, operated by Jellinbah Group Pty Ltd (Jellinbah); Jellinbah Plains, a contractor-run operation; and Mackenzie North, operated by Jellinbah.[14]
The expansion is expected to increase production by 1 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) and extend the life of the mine by 20 years. It will produce pulverised coal injection (PCI) coal and minor amounts of thermal coal within the Rangal Coal Measures.[14]
As of 2023, Jellinbah's Central North mine extension has commenced.[15]

Coal Mine Boundaries and Methane Sources
Global Energy Monitor researchers have identified coal mine boundary/boundaries and potential sources of coal mine methane (CMM) for this mine. These research results can be used to drive CMM attribution and mitigation efforts, particularly when combined with remotely sensed methane plume locations and mine ownership data. Explore the results with the embedded map at the top of this page by clicking on the mine boundary polygon or the CMM placemarkers to reveal more details. A detailed description of this research can be found in Coal Mine Boundaries and Methane Sources. This data is also available as a downloadable companion dataset to the Global Coal Mine Tracker and the Global Methane Emitters Tracker.

"The Jellinbah Coal Mine consist of five (5) distinct operating areas, referred to as South, Central, Central North, Plains, and Mackenzie North (listed north to south). Current operations involve open cut coal mining in the Central, Central North and Mackenzie North areas. The South pit was mined up until 2003 and since used for storage of excess mine affected water.". Figure 2.1 on page 9 of the same document shows the mining leases that comprise Jellinbah mine. The mine boundary includes all mining leases shown in Figure 2.1. The area of the boundary is 84 sq km. Mining lease geometries were extracted from the Queensland Mining Leases dataset (https://web.archive.org/web/2/https://www.data.qld.gov.au/dataset/queensland-mining-and-exploration-tenure-series/resource/f87794b8-7b9a-4732-89bb-56ccb2228d27). |
