Background

The Jellinbah coal mine, also known as Jellinbah East, is located 90 kilometers east of Emerald in the Bowen Basin of central Queensland, Australia. The Jellinbah mine is owned by Jellinbah East Joint Venture, with Jellinbah Group (or Jellinbah Resources) having 70% interest and Marubeni Coal and Sojitz Coal each with 15% interests.[3]

Anglo American, which is an "associate" of the Jellinbah Group Pty Limited (which was known as "Queensland Coal Mine Management (Pty) Limited" before 2011), owns a 23.3% interest in Jellinbah operations.[4]

Expansion

In 2019, the Jellinbah East Joint Venture submitted a proposal titled the "Jellinbah Central North Extension," which proposed an addition of three mining leases to the existing Jellinbah Coal Mine.[10] (The current mine, Jellinbah, encompasses three operating mine areas: Jellinbah Central, operated by Jellinbah Group Pty Ltd (Jellinbah); Jellinbah Plains, a contractor-run operation; and Mackenzie North, operated by Jellinbah.[10]

The expansion is expected to increase production by 1 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) and extend the life of the mine by 20 years. It will produce pulverised coal injection (PCI) coal and minor amounts of thermal coal within the Rangal Coal Measures.[10]

As of 2023, Jellinbah's Central North mine extension has commenced.[11]
