Background
Kante Coal Mine is a surface mine in Ayni, Soghd region, Tajikistan.[10] The Kante coal mine is owned and operated by Talco Resurs LLC, created in 2012. It is within the group of the the state-owned Tajik Aluminium Company OJSC (TALCO).[11]
Kante coal mine formed part of the Fon-Yagnob coal deposit, which accounted for 64.4% of Tajikistan’s industrial coal reserves, indicating the strategic importance of the area for national coal production.[12]
In March 2013, the Government of the country adopted a Decree on the allocation to develop high-quality coal from two sections “Dzhidzhikrut” and “Konte” (Kante) at the “Fon Yagnob” deposit in the Ainy district of the Sughd region.[11] The mine is located in the Fong-Yaghnob coal field, just like Fong-Yaghnob Coal Mine, but on the western flank of the deposit.[10][13]
Talco Resurs supplies coal to TALCO, Dushanbe-2 power station, the Yavan cement plant, the Dushanbe cement plant, and other industrial enterprises in Tajikistan. In 2018, the company also began coal exports to Uzbekistan under a supply agreement of 37,300 tonnes.[14]
As of 2020, Talco Resurs mined about 0.4 million tonnes, and it was said to be able to increase production several times depending on demand. Since its formation in 2012, Talco Resurs has mined about 2 million tonnes of coal.[15][11] (that's 0.25 million tonnes per annum on average).
Talco Resurs supplies coal to thermal power plants and industrial sector in Tajikistan.[15]
In the seven months of 2023, the mine was reported to have produced 388 thousand tonnes.[16]
According to 2023 reports, the mining license of Talco Resurs LLC at the Kante coal mine had expired, leading to a halt in production;[17] accordingly, GEM classifies the mine as 'shelved', which is further supported by its absence from official coal production statistics in Tajikistan.[18]
