Kerch Trading Port Coal Terminal (Ukrainian: Керченський торговий порт) is a coal terminal in Ukraine.
The port once handled coal, but the Russian occupation of Crimea since 2014, and invasion of Ukraine in 2022, has significantly reduced cargo volumes.
Location
The port is located in the city of Kerch on the eastern shores of Kerch peninsula at Kerch Bay, in the disputed territory of Crimea.
Coal terminal
Kerch Trading Port Coal Terminal is a universal port terminal that can handle up to 2.5 million tonnes of cargo per year. The port has reloading devices and machinery to handle general cargo such as steel products, and bulk cargo including coke and coal.[1] There is no specialized coal terminal on site.
In 2012, the port handled 1.7 mtpa of coal, decreasing to 0.5 mtpa in 2013.[2] As of 2006, 90% of cargo handled by the port was transit cargo.[3]
When Russia began its offensive in Crimea, it quickly seized the Port of Kerch, which lies at the eastern tip of Crimea, across the Kerch strait from Russia. International sanctions imposed against Russia after its occupation included restrictions on commercial vessels at Crimean ports. This has resulted in a near total stoppage of commercial cargo being handled at the Port of Kerch: Prior to Russian occupation, the port handled over 2 million tonnes of cargo per year; in 2018, that number fell to 384,000 tonnes, and by 2020, the port handled just 238 tonnes of cargo.[4]
Russian media source from October 2022 stated that the larger port can handle up to 6.5 million tonnes of cargo, however in 2021 it only handled 0.29 million tonnes. In the first half of 2022 - 0.14 million tonnes. The main cargo is grain.[5]
It is likely the terminal does not handle coal equal to or more than 1 million tonnes per year. As of 2025, the following companies appear to be operating in the larger port: Kerch Branch of FSUE NIKIMP, TES-Terminal-1 LLC, Taman Directorate of the Azov-Black Sea Basin Branch of FSUE Rosmorport, AS-Terminal LLC[6] The coal terminal is presumed to be mothballed.
