Background
Khuren Shand Coal Mine (Хүрэншандын нүүрсний уурхай) is an operating surface coal mine in Gurvantes soum, Ömnögovi Province, Mongolia. The mine is situated 35 km south of Gurvantes soum centre, 300 km west of Dalandzadgad, 850 km southwest of Ulaanbaatar, and 45 km north of the Shivee Khuren border crossing with China.[11] The licensed mining area covers 350.1 hectares.
The mine is owned and operated by Usukh Zoos LLC (Өсөх зоос ХХК), a 100% Mongolian-owned private company established in 2008 and engaged in mineral extraction and foreign trade.[11]
Geology
The Khuren Shand deposit is part of the Nariin Sukhait coal-bearing basin in Ömnögovi Province. The Nariin Sukhait basin comprises four sections — Khuren Tolgoi, Ovoot Tolgoi, Khuren Shand and Nariin Sukhait — with combined registered geological reserves of 1,004.94 million tonnes of coal, as reported by the Mongolian Mineral Resources Professional Council.[12]
Operations
Mining commenced in January 2014, with a planned production rate of 3 million tonnes per year over an eight-year project life. By July 2016, the mine had extracted a cumulative total of 4.2 million tonnes of coal, of which 3.8 million tonnes had been exported. At that time, 405 engineering and technical staff from nine Mongolian contractor companies were employed at the site.[13]
In July 2016, six Hitachi Construction Machinery excavators were delivered to the mine by ZAMain Services LLC, a joint venture between Japan's Marubeni Corporation and Mongolia's Tavan Bogd Group, and the authorised Mongolian distributor for Hitachi Construction Machinery. The equipment contract was valued at 11 billion MNT.[13]
Coal produced at the mine is exported to China via the Shivee Khuren–Ceke border crossing.[11]
According to the company's chairman, the mine extracts 2.5–3 million tonnes of coal per year in line with a 16-year mining plan.[14]
