Background

Kirova coal mine (Шахта им. Кирова) is an underground mine in Kemerovo Oblast, Russia.

The Kirova coal mine is owned and operated by SUEK-Kuzbass JSC, a subsidiary of Siberian Coal Energy Company (SUEK).

As of 2019, annual production was about 5 million tonnes of high volatile coal, about 3 Mt of which was exported (semi-soft and steam coal).[9] The Kirova washing plant produces metallurgical coal, which is in demand by steel companies both in Russia and abroad.[10] The total capacity of the washing plant is 6 Mtpa.[9]

The Kirova coal mine launched a new seam and modernized the mine in 2019[11], which allowed to reach production of 4.7 million tonnes in 2020 and 5.5 million tonnes in 2021.[12]

In 2022, it was reported that SUEK-Kuzbass was working on a project to join some mining areas of the Kirova coal mine and Komsomolets coal mine to be able to mine the seams Boldyrevsky, Polenovsky (Kirova) and Tolmachevksy (Komsomolets).[12] In addition the company was working to expand the mine in Komsomolsky Gluboky section.[12] SUEK acquired the license to Komsomolsky Gluboky section in 2018, with estimated reserves are 319 Mt.[13] It appeared that an Environmental Impact Assessment and the public consultation should have been concluded by mid-2022.[14] As of September 2023, there were no news on the project.

The Kirova coal mine and Komsomolets coal mine of SUEK are equipped with recovery systems and gas engine plants that capture methane gas from the mines and use it to generate heat and electricity.[10] However the Federal Technical Supervisory Authority (Rostechnadzor) registered violations of allowed methane levels at the mine several times in 2022, and temporarily suspended operations.[15][16] Operations were suspended again (presumably temporarily) in April 2023[17] and then in August 2023.[18] Increased checks at the mines in 2022 and 2023 follow the tragic accident at Listvyazhnaya coal mine in late 2021 due to methane leak.

In December 2022, SUEK reported that high-tech (water) treatment facilities of modular type with a capacity of 400 m3/h were put into operation.[19]

In the year ending July 2023, the mine produced 5.7 million tonnes of coal.[20]
