Background

The Kozlu coal mine is an underground mine, operated by Kozllu Taşkömürü Işletme Müessesesi, a TTK subsidiary, producing 155,759 tons per annum, near Kozlu, Zonguldak, Turkey.[4] The mine is located in the Zonguldak coalfield alongside four other mines operated by TTK subsidiaries, Amasra, Armutçuk, Üzülmez and Karadon.[5]

Mining in the Kozlu district started in the 1840s. From mid-19th century until early 20th century mining activities in Kozlu were undertaken by foreign firms, first English and then Italian. In 1926 the mine operations in Kozlu were nationalized through the establishment of Kozlu Kömür İşleri (Kozlu Coal Enterprise), a subsidiary of the then state-owned İşbank. In 1936, the mine was transferred to another state-owned bank, Etibank. In 1957, Türkiye Kömür İşletmeleri (Turkey Coal Enterprises) or TKI was established and took over the Kozlu mine. In 1983, Türkiye Taşkömürü Kurumu (Turkey Hard Coal Company) or TTK was established and received the Kozlu mine through its subsidiary Kozlu Taşkömürü işletme Müessesesi or KozluT.İ.M. (Kozlu Hard Coal Enterprise) which has operated the mine since then.[6]

In 2020 Kozlu mine had 1852 employees of which 1688 were laborers and 165 were office workers. The same year, the mine reported 153 million tons in reserves. Of 153 million tons in reserves, 3 million were defined as ready, 62 million as proven, 40 million as probable and 48 million as possible according to TTK's categorization. Thus, the mine had 65 million tons in proven reserves (ready and proven) and 88 million tons in probable reserves (probable and possible). In 2020, the mine produced 155 thousand tons.[6]

Kozlu mine is the only mine in Turkey that extracts coal from underwater.[6]
