Background

Kushiro coal mine is an operating mine in Kushiro, Japan. As of 2021, it is Japan's last operating underground coal mine, and is one of few remaining coal mines.[6] (Several small-scale, open-pit operations reportedly still exist, but these are rarely reported on, and their coal production is minimal (under 1 million tonnes per annum, combined). Kushiro Coal Mine Company owns and operates the mine.[6]

While the mine reportedly feeds the neighboring Kushiro power station (which opened in 2020), it generally produces less than 0.5 million tonnes of coal per annum.[6][7]
