Background

La Alexandra Coal Mine (Proyecto La Alexandra) is a shelved coal mine proposal in El Paso, Cesar, Colombia.

La Alexandra was a proposed greenfield thermal coal mine under mining title OG2-09327 in the municipality of El Paso, Cesar department. As of the August 2021 ANM project profile — the only publicly available documentation — all key parameters including investment, capacity, annual production, employment, mine type, and mineral reserves and resources were listed as under evaluation. The stated mine life was 30 years. The project was in its first year of exploration at the time of the profile. Initial prospecting indicated structural and lithological continuity favourable for the presence of coal seams of the Los Cuervos Formation in the concession area. The project was located near Drummond's El Descanso mine, one of Colombia's major open-pit thermal coal operations in Cesar.[2]

By March 2026, no evidence of progress beyond the August 2021 ANM profile was identified in publicly available sources. Without evidence of advancement over more than four years, the project was presumed shelved.

Licensing status

As of August 2021, no environmental licence had been requested and no PTO had been submitted to the ANM. The mining title OG2-09327, held by Roberto Antonio Galván Romero as a natural person, was registered on July 20, 2021 and listed as active in the ANM national mining registry as of March 2026.[2][3]

Ownership

The project was held by Roberto Antonio Galván Romero, a Colombian natural person. No corporate operator was identified in the August 2021 ANM profile. No parent company was identified in publicly available sources as of March 2026.[2]
