Magdalla Port is a port located on India's west coast, along the southern bank of the Tapi river in the state of Gujarat.[1] Major imports handled by Magdalla Port include coal.[2]
Location
Magdalla Port is a lighterage port operated by the Gujarat Maritime Board on the southern bank of the Tapi River, approximately 16 kilometres upstream from its mouth. A deep water anchorage is located 10 km southwest from the port. The port is connected with Udhana city GIDC and Pandesara Industrial Estate and the port is connected with Surat by state highway No.66. Magdalla Port is also connected by road and rail with several other towns in the area.
Background
Magdalla Port opened as an intermediate port in 1966, initially handling exports of bananas and imports of fertilizer and food grains. The date on which coal handling began at GMB Jetty No. 1 has not been identified.[3]
Coal is handled as an import cargo at GMB Jetty No. 1, a 210-metre multipurpose jetty. The jetty also handles imports of rock phosphate and machinery and exports including mill scale, soybeans and molasses.[4]
Much of the imported coal arriving at Magdalla Port comes from Indonesia.[5] Magdalla appears regularly as one of India's key coal ports on Platts' summaries of Indian coal import activity[6], and a March 2017 report from the International Journal of Advance Engineering and Research Development indicates that coal is the only commodity currently handled at the port.[7]
Local news sources state that approximately 18,000 tonnes of coal moves out of the port each day.[8][9]
Magdalla remained an operating coal-handling port in fiscal year 2024–25, when coal and iron and steel were identified as its major commodities.[10] Gujarat Maritime Board statistics report that its public facilities at Magdalla handled 6.271 million tonnes of all cargo in 2023–24 and 6.627 million tonnes in 2024–25.[11]
Pollution
Coal trucks carrying coal from the Magdalla Port frequently spill coal dust along the streets of Surat, India, causing major pollution. Local groups have repeatedly pressured the government to take action to address the problem, but as of November 2020, the issue remained unresolved.[8][9][12]
